So we had our East Surrey Twins Club first aid course on Monday night, 12 of us wolfed down our dinners to get to the Subud Hall for this incredibly informative evening!
Adrian from Back2Life was our trainer and he has been practicing and teaching first aid for not far short of 20 years.
Throughout the evening we ran through the basics for choking, resuscitation, recovery positions for babies, toddlers and adults. We also had time for Q&A on other topics such as burns and breaks.
I think everyone got something out of it, even those that have done training before – changes were made in both 2005 and 2010 so there are some differences to guidelines today.
What did we learn? That chest compressions are best done to any of the best 80’s anthems! Staying Alive, as per the advert with Vinnie Jones, is a popular choice! In our training, we were also including mouth-to-mouth breathing. At the end of the day, doing something for someone that is not breathing is better than nothing at all regardless of the situation you find yourself in.
Also something none of us knew – iphones 6 and above have a ‘Health App’ in which you can store all medical records for you and your family. This can be accessed by medical professionals without unlocking your phone so if you or your someone in your family is involved in an emergency situation, it may be of value to the people helping you at that critical time.
The evening was packed full of useful information and if you would like to register your interest for a training evening in the future then please email us at the Club. It was heavily subsidised by our fundraising money, at £10 per head. Email: eastsurreytwinsclub@hotmail.co.uk.
Thanks again for everyone involved in the evening, it was a great success! (Now hopefully we will never have to use it…)
